Gap Inc. is turning its longtime San Francisco headquarters into a bigger platform for the people shaping Bay Area creative culture.

The San Francisco-born company announced a new group of investments spanning artist residencies, live music, maker entrepreneurship and public art. At the center is The House, a new artist residency and live-music series based at Gap Inc.’s 2 Folsom headquarters.

The program is designed around Bay Area musicians, visual artists, textile artists and makers. Gap says The House will include quarterly performances, rotating residencies, site-specific installations, commissioned work, collaborations and workshops, beginning with installations in the building’s Embarcadero-facing windows.

There is a second layer aimed directly at independent creative businesses. Gap Inc. is expanding its work with nonprofit Nest through the Makers Future Fund, bringing a six-month program to 30 Bay Area craft-based business owners. Participants will receive weekly classes, individualized coaching, peer support and a $2,500 grant.

The initiative also moves outside the headquarters. Gap Inc. is partnering with the Institute of Contemporary Art San Francisco, which will work with the Port of San Francisco on a temporary large-scale artwork covering the exterior of Pier 24 by a Bay Area artist.

For the KOLAK Archive, the story sits at an interesting intersection: a global fashion company using its physical headquarters not simply as office space, but as infrastructure for local music, art, textiles and independent design. In a region usually framed through technology, the project puts another part of the Bay Area ecosystem in focus—the people making culture by hand.
