KOLAK ARCHIVE SCOUT | October 16, 2026 | San Rafael, California
The Marin County Civic Center is hosting an unusual meeting of architecture, fashion and sustainability. When Simon Met Ralph: A Retrospective highlights Marin-based designers Simon Ungless and Jody Niederkohr, whose practice reworks existing garments and everyday materials into one-of-a-kind design objects.
The exhibition spans the Civic Center’s first- and third-floor galleries, setting feather-print suits, rubber-treated lace pieces, textile work and new graphic art against the architecture of Frank Lloyd Wright. A collaboration with ceramicist Susan McKinney gives another life to beads reclaimed from vintage 1920s dresses, bringing fashion remnants into ceramic objects.
For KOLAK Archive Scout, the show connects the Bay Area’s experimental spirit to a different kind of innovation: making new cultural value from what already exists. The free exhibition runs October 1, 2026 through January 7, 2027, at the Marin County Civic Center in San Rafael. It is a reminder that design and technology do not always move in the same direction—sometimes the next idea begins by reworking the past.
