San Francisco’s Mission District became an open-air gallery as hundreds of lowriders rolled down Mission Street for the annual “King of the Streets” celebration. The event marked the San Francisco Lowrider Council’s 45th anniversary with a parade, car show, hopping competition and art exhibition.

Cars as Personal Design

Lowriding transforms transportation through paint, typography, upholstery, chrome, engineering and hydraulics. More than 300 lowriders were scheduled for display, while the Mission Cultural Center exhibition brought together historical artifacts, fine art and material documenting the Council’s history.

For KOLAK Archive, the connection is direct: a lowrider can function like clothing or sneakers at their most expressive—an everyday object rebuilt until it communicates identity.
