October 19, 2026 — California.
Vans and SZA are bringing their shared design language into focus ahead of the October 22 release of VANSZA Drop 1. Shot against California's open landscapes, the newly unveiled campaign treats skatewear as a starting point for experimentation, comfort and personal expression.
SKATE SHOES, REWORKED
The footwear is led by two altered Vans favorites. The Knu Skool Mule opens up the back of the familiar skate silhouette, while the Authentic Kickdown uses a collapsible heel so the wearer can move between a standard sneaker feel and a slip-on shape. Artist Sage Adams contributes artwork to the Authentic Kickdown.
Neither design requires abandoning the original Vans DNA. Instead, SZA shifts how the shoes are worn — turning everyday habits into design decisions.
CALIFORNIA AS THE BACKDROP
Photographer India Sleem captured the campaign among California's hills and rugged natural settings, with additional product and landscape photography by Yudo Kurita. The collection reaches beyond footwear through relaxed denim, roomy utility silhouettes and outdoor-inflected apparel.
The natural surroundings make an interesting counterpoint to the streetwear construction: practical clothes photographed far from the pavement that first gave skate culture its identity.
THE KOLAK ARCHIVE NOTE
VANSZA is another example of a musician shaping not simply the marketing of a collaboration, but its form. Silhouette, comfort, artwork and campaign environment are treated as connected parts of the same idea. That is the detail worth recording.
